Ho Chi Minh City dated 16 Feb 2017 - Gaia Nature Conservation conducted a training course on composting at Saigon South International School (SSIS).
The training course helps participants to learn about composting, why it is a meaningful activity and how to start a composting programme.
Participated in the training course were approximately 30 participants including 20 GIN Club members (aged 15 to 17 years old), teachers, administrators, gardeners and caterers of the SSIS.
At the training course, participants learned about composting and how to create a compost bin. Based on facts of SSIS, Gaia experts recommend an effective & feasible composting model so that it does not affect health and meets hygiene standards of the school. At the training course, participants also developed a plan on setting up a composting programme in SSIS, targeting recycling food waste and educating students on waste recycling.
Gaia will help SSIS’s GIN Club to finalise the plan as well as keep providing technical supports to make the composting model comes to reality in SSIS soon.
Composting is a great solution to recycle organic waste while contributing to environment protection. The food waste in Ho Chi Minh City in general and in SSIS in particular is currently transferred to landfills. It might take the food waste approximately three to ten years to be decomposed. And the decomposition of food waste in landfills always releases methane - a greenhouse gas that causes global warming. If being composted, the food waste will quickly be transformed into humus and thus nutrients to the soil in three months to one year. The compost activity will also help to save land area for landfill and save money for waste processing. According to Ms. Huyen Thi Thanh Do – Gaia’s Founder& Executive Director, “A composting programme in school is a great way to educate students about waste recycle and environment protection, at the same time, earns school pride for the righteous thing they are doing to the Earth”.
Please contact Gaia at info@gaiavn.org if you are considering starting a composting programme in your school or at home. We will provide you adequate knowledge and technical supports FOC so that you can start your own compost programme, and thus joining Gaia save our Earth.
