In the beginning of April 2017, Gaia Nature Conservation trained and guided teachers and students of Sai Gon South International School (SSIS) on construction of compost tumblers. This is one activity of the compost project that aims to recycle organic waste and thus mitigating climate change.
Approximately 15 teachers and students of grade 10 to 12 were exciting to take part in the training course. During the training, three compost tumblers were successfully constructed. Each tumbler has a volume of 220L and will process roughly 100kg of school’s food waste.
The tumblers were selected by Gaia for SSIS as this is the most appropriate and effective model for the school. It does not only meet hygiene standards but also easy the regular rotation and eliminate bad odor. The tumblers also shorten composting time.
The Compost project was activated in last Feb with a training course for teachers and students of the SSIS on compost theory and compost plan development. The compost programme with three compost tumblers and a series of educations and communications activities will be launched at the SSIS on the Earth Day 2017. Students from GIN Club will take charge of all activities, especially taking care of compost tumblers.
“This is the first compost programme in one international school in Vietnam. And compost tumblers are also the first of its kind in Vietnam. The compost programme is a great move of SSIS to save our Earth. We do hope that the compost programme will be applied widely in schools, families and farms in Vietnam so that, together we can save our Earth.” – Said Ms. Huyen Do – Founder & Executive Director of Gaia Nature Conservation.
Composting reduces organic waste and thus contributes to protect the environment and mitigate climate change. Composting programme is also a great opportunity to educate students on waste recycling and a sustainable living to our Earth.
Do not hesitate to contact Gaia at info@gaiavn.org if you want to develop and activate a compost programme in your schools, families or farms. Depending on different food wastes and expectation, Gaia will consult you on appropriate models and programmes.
